[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Establishing the Family-Friendly Campus: Models for Effective Practice, Jaime Lester and Margaret Sallee, Eds. (Stylus Publishing, 2009, $79.95 hardback or $29.95 paperback) With this volume on family-friendly policy and practice, editor (and OCWW contributor) Jaime Lester and editor Margaret Sallee have created a much-needed kit for retooling work–life balance in academe. Identifying a need for inclusivity that has expanded with the growth of womens academic roles, Lester and Sallee have compiled an informative baedeker for multiple routes toward institutions that are more family-friendly for both women and men. Highlighting approaches that range from institutional supports for parents (stop-the-clock options, lactation rooms, flexible scheduling) to the grassroots activism that buttresses those options, the book illustrates how effective cultural change connects at all levels of the institution.
Holly Furneaux. Queer Dickens: Erotics, Families, Masculinities. Oxford: Oxford UP, 2009. Pp. ix 282. $99. Queer Dickens is one of those books: the kind I am always hoping to read and seldom do. Informed and inspired by contemporary theoretical insights, it examines a body of literature and, as a result, both literature and theory are transformed for the reader. The theory–in this instance, queer theory–brings to the surface new and unexpected conjunctions and complexities in the works of Dickens, challenging orthodoxies about the author and his era. In turn, the literary texts “talk back” to the more recently established truisms of gender and sexuality and show that queer theorys accounts of “families of choice” and other forms of elective affinities as recent challenges to the heteronormative formations of the past in fact have a considerably longer history than often assumed. Furneauxs deliberately provocative title does not preface a reductive biographical reading of Dickens–the man or his work–that simplistically uncovers, for instance, a hidden (homo)sexual past. Rather, the author clearly establishes from the outset the significance of queer theory for allowing a fresh investigation of sexuality, gender and intimacy, “beyond the constricting binary of hetero or homo” sexualities (10). “I define queer,” Furneaux states, “as that which demonstrates that marriage and reproduction are not the only, or indeed the dominant or preferred, modes of being, and, in doing so, undoes an unhelpfully narrow model of identity as determined by a fixed point of sexual orientation” (9). Pursuing lines of enquiry opened up by the work of gender and queer theorists such as Judith Butler, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick and Sharon Marcus, Queer Dickens is interested in forms of intimacy, affinity and family formation beyond the stereotype of the biological bourgeois family supposedly at the heart of Victorian culture. Furneaux makes a convincing case that in the period of Dickenss career, “there was a greater flexibility in the thinking of the erotic, less focused on object choice, and better able to articulate desires” beyond what are narrowly defined within the sexual (11). She also shows how Dickens contributed to this flexibility, citing numerous examples of same-sex desire, surrogate parents, nurturing masculinity and other alternative domestic configurations in his work. Queer Dickens begins by exploring “the exuberant diversity of Dickenss fictional families,” which incorporate unmarried foster fathers, same-sex couples, single and multiple parenting, as well as maritally-averse bachelors and spinsters (24). In this crucial first chapter, Furneauxs aim is to refute the orthodoxy that the reproductive heterosexual couple occupies the central place in Dickensian family formations. Through an examination of foster fathering and the plot of adoption in novels such as Oliver Twist, David Copperfield and Dombey and Son, Furneaux argues that not only did Dickens consistently emphasize the constructed nature of family, de-privileging genealogy as a guarantee of nurture or intimacy, but that–from Sketches by Boz to the Christmas writings of the 1860s–his writing celebrated a broad range of elective affinities and created “space for other patterns of care and new understandings of family” (69). In the second chapter on “Serial Bachelorhood,” Furneaux brings together an examination of bachelor figures in Dickens with the history of serial publication, arguing that serials offer “a particularly attenuated experience of closure” and may thus effectively disrupt the “marital denouement” associated so strongly with the Victorian novel (83). This chapter demonstrates one of the strengths of this study, in that by giving as much attention to early works such as The Pickwick Papers and Master Humphreys Clock as to the later novels, Queer Dickens is able to track patterns, themes, devices and desires across texts, and persuasively support the revisionist claims contained in this book. Here, Furneaux draws a connection between the prevalence of bachelors in these early stories (some of whom return and circulate among texts) and the “rejection of marriage as a device for closure” (106), reading Dickenss serial bachelors as a means by which a space for “counter-marital, counter-reproductive” narratives could be sustained (84).

More than 100 HPV types have been identified with more than 30 being sexually transmitted (7). Anogenital HPV types have been classified into low-risk types (non-oncogenic), which are associated with anogenital warts (condyloma acuminata), oral and conjunctival papillomas, recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (in infants and young children), and mild dysplasia (8). High-risk types (oncogenic) are associated with high-grade dysplasia and various cancers. Current estimates of the attributable fraction, the proportion of cancer cases preventable by the elimination of HPV, are very high (9): 100% for cervical, 90% for anal, 40% for vulvar and vaginal, 50% for cancer of the penis, and between 33 and 72% of oropharyngeal cancers (10). Although there has been increasing interest in understanding the burden of HPV infection and related comorbidities in men (11), studies in this group are still quite limited (12), particularly among Hispanics. Research and surveillance data have indicated that Hispanics have been disproportionately affected by HIV/ AIDS (13), Other STIs (14) and may engage disproportionately in high-risk sexual behaviors (15). In addition, a higher incidence of cervical cancer is observed in Puerto Rico and Hispanic women in the US compared with non-Hispanic whites (Figure 1). These factors could reflect a potential higher prevalence of HPV infection in these populations, as well as disparities in screening rates in these groups (16) suggesting that Hispanic and Puerto Rican men might also be at higher risk for HPV infection and related health outcomes. This high incidence might also lead to a significant economic burden. In Puerto Rico for example, it was estimated that the economic impact of HPV related cancers in 2004 was approximately 7.5% (close to 5 million dollars) of the total cancer costs (17). Even though HPV infection is highly prevalent in sexually active men, (18), most research studies have focused only in women. Studies in men are of particular relevance because, as with other STIs, men play a key role in the transmission dynamics to both male and female sexual partners. It is also clear that HPV infection in men is a serious clinical issue, given the association of HPV infection with a variety of cancers in men, including anal cancer and a subset of penile and oral cancers (19). With the world-wide introduction of two new prophylactic vaccines (bivalent vaccine protecting against HPV 16 and 18, and the quadrivalent vaccine protecting against HPV 16, 18, 6 and 11) against oncogenic HPVs causing cervical cancer in women (20), and the recent FDA approval of the quadrivalent vaccine to prevent genital warts also in men, there is an urgency to determine the burden of HPV in Hispanic populations before vaccination programs are implemented on a widespread basis. Knowledge of the burden of the disease and its related morbidities prior to implementation of these programs will allow a better assessment and understanding of the short-term and long-term effectiveness of this primary prevention strategy for cervical neoplasia and genital warts. In addition, it will permit exploring the prevalence of type-specific HPVs in these populations, not currently included in the HPV vaccines available in the market.
The main goal of the Training Program is to increase the number of Hispanic students knowledgeable and committed to careers in cancer research and cancer medicine. The specific objectives are to prepare Hispanic students to pursue careers in cancer research, cancer medicine, and population sciences and to establish a Career Development Program for clinical and basic scientist faculty at the Comprehensive Cancer Center of the University of Puerto Rico (UPRCCC). The Training Program includes a series of didactic and research experiences, and enrichment activities that include on-campus cancer research at the UPR campuses during the academic year, and summer research and year-round rotations to MDACC. These experiences are complemented and supported by a structured Mentoring Program for students and junior investigators. The mentors are well recognized senior Faculty, mostly from MDACC. Training Opportunities Various research programs are available in UPR and MDACC, all sponsored by the U54 Training Program. In the UPR there is Research Assistantships Stipends Program for Undergraduate and Graduate Students. Students have the opportunity of working in cancer research projects under the guidance of Faculty in mid to senior stages of their academic careers. Most of these scientists are re-gearing their careers to Cancer Research. The students are also required to attend Seminars and Workshops offered through the academic year, mostly offered by visiting world-renowned scientists.

Women in Kenya remain disadvantaged, with opportunities for educational, social, and economic advancement inferior to those of men. Women are underrepresented in modern sector wage employment, political and judicial decision making, and all major public service appointments. Numerous social, economic, and cultural barriers limit womens participation in these areas. But womens underrepresentation in education is a primary factor. The benefits of womens education to women and to society in general are immense. In the workplace, education increases skills needed for job entry, improves chances of vertical mobility, and enhances overall labor market productivity. It also has positive consequences at home, including improved health, increased child survival rates, reduced fertility rates, lower infant mortality rates, and better protection against HIV and AIDS (Tembon and Fort 2008). Education of women and girls is therefore not only a moral and human rights issue, but also an economic and development issue. Given the significant benefits of womens education, equity in education is essential to improving circumstances for all Kenyans. As the leading provider of education, the government should acknowledge that compensatory mechanisms may be required to level the playing field for disadvantaged girls, and it should adopt an approach that uses these mechanisms. Making education equitable means adopting policies and initiatives that support equal provisions across genders. Female Education in Kenya Education in Kenya has four basic levels: preschool (ages 4-6), primary (ages 7-14), secondary (ages 15-18), and tertiary. Since attaining political independence from Great Britain in 1963, the Kenyan government has emphasized educations importance to economic development. It has also increased the number of schools at all levels, from about six thousand primary and 150 secondary schools in 1963 to almost twenty thousand primary and four thousand secondary schools in 2004. As a result, the student population has increased substantially, with over 700 percent growth at the primary level and almost 3,000 percent growth at the secondary level (Ministry of Education 2007). But this total expansion in education hides disparities by gender and region.

Its human to take chances in search of relief. Faced with the same circumstances, you wouldve done precisely what Jason Pegg did. In the mountainous territory southwest of Khowst in eastern Afghanistan, where midday temperatures in May can make a man–especially an American soldier in full battle dress–feel as though he has been shoved headlong into a blast furnace, you wouldve opened your car window and hung your arm out, too. Three hundred yards to his left and concealed from view, two Taliban fighters waited in a wheat field and watched Peggs Humvee move toward a section of road bounded on both sides by a 4-foot-high rock wall. As the vehicle rolled through the walled stretch, the Taliban duo set off a command-detonated improvised explosive device they had embedded in the wall on Peggs side. Two 107mm rockets slammed into the rear drivers side door. Had the Humvees door been open, Pegg wouldve been cut in half. “My eardrums were punctured from the overpressure and I had a concussion, so my first thought in all the confusion was that we had blown a tire,” he says. “I didnt feel anything and we had stopped to fix a tire a half-hour before, so I thought it had happened again.” Sprawled sideways from the blast, Pegg sat up and did a quick physical inventory. He wasnt in any pain, but his uniform and boots were covered with blood, and dozens of small shrapnel holes dotted his left sleeve. He tried to unlatch the Humvee door with his left hand, but his arm wouldnt move.

During the second half of the last century, the incidence of cancer in PR increased dramatically; however, rates seem to have begun to stabilize in more recent years (8-9). Previous studies in the 1970s and 1980s showed a lower incidence of total cancer in persons residing in PR as compared with the general population in the United States (US) (8) and to Puerto Ricans (10) living in the continental US. Recent studies show similar patterns for selected cancer types (11-14). However, the incidence from infection related cancers such as stomach, liver and cervical is higher in PR than in the US (12). Also, contrary to the US, these cancer types also rank among the leading cancer sites in incidence and mortality (8, 11, 15-16). The PR Central Cancer Registry (PRCCR) is the fourth oldest population based cancer registry in the world (8, 17) and collects information on cancer in PR since 1951. The PRCCR is part of the National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR) administered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). As with any other surveillance system, the PRCCR is responsible for generating data on cancer burden for the Puerto Rican population, as the collection, analysis and dissemination of health information are important components of public health surveillance systems (18). Given that the last official report of the PRCCR regarding cancer burden in PR was published in 1991 (9), this special article describes the incidence and mortality data for cancer in PR for the period of 1987 to 2004. In addition, we assess differences in cancer incidence and mortality by sex, municipality and health region. This information is important to identify changes in cancer occurrence in PR and to guide the development of future interventions aimed at diminishing the burden of the disease in our population.

In August 2004, the Law #230, approved by the Government of Puerto Rico in a three party resolution, created the University of Puerto Rico Comprehensive Cancer Center (UPRCCC), a public corporation affiliated to the University of Puerto Rico. This law established that this Center will be the organism responsible for executing the public policy related to the prevention, education, and research, as well as the clinical and treatment services related to cancer in Puerto Rico. The dual mission of the UPRCCC is: (1) To deliver the best research-driven cancer care through programs that integrate patient care, research, prevention, and education, and (2) To eradicate cancer in Puerto Rico using a multidisciplinary approach of basic, clinical, and population research. Thus, the UPRCCC is fundamental for the development of cancer control, research, and training efforts in Puerto Rico. More recently, in 2008, with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Puerto Rico published its first official Cancer Control Plan, a structured guide with measurable outcomes aimed at reducing the cancer burden in our population. All of the previously mentioned initiatives will continue to be key to the progress in cancer control and research in Puerto Rico and thus, to the quality of the preventive and treatment services that we will offer to our patients. The increase in the cancer burden in Puerto Rico has been accompanied by a substantial increase in the volume of published research and federal funds to academic institutions in Puerto Rico for cancer research. Despite this advancement, areas that need our continued support and development in the years to come include: 1) continued surveillance of cancer occurrence in Puerto Rico through the Puerto Rico Central Cancer Registry, 2) development of transdisciplinary and translational cancer research that encompass all areas of the cancer control continuum (prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship), 3) outreach efforts that bring scientific knowledge to the development of targeted cancer control strategies for the community, 4) development of sound cancer-related public policy, and 5) continued training of the next generation of cancer researchers and health professionals. Our ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary local and international teams will be essential to our success. The forthcoming issue of the Puerto Rico Health Sciences Journal provides an informative summary of various research studies that are currently being conducted in Puerto Rico. The 17 articles in this issue describe diverse research areas in the cancer field including disease burden, disease prevention, correlates of cancer occurrence, diagnostic technologies and clinical management. In addition, an overview of cancer training efforts in the island is discussed. Our future as a healthy nation will require a concerted effort between government, academia and industry that lead the research, training, and public policy efforts that will ultimately result in improved cancer prevention and control outcomes for the people of Puerto Rico. We hope you find in this edition of the journal a well-rounded overview of cancer research in Puerto Rico.

ALEADING Scottish property developer employed “evil scheming” to gain access to historic land to build a lucrative private housing estate, according to documents seen by the Sunday Herald. The Lomond Group secretly planned to bounce Fife Council into ordering the demolition of a 300-year-old wall in the conservation village of Falkland, so farmland behind it could be opened up for a development likely to reap a multi-million pound profit. The companys behaviour has been condemned as “bullying” and “despicable” by residents, who described the destruction of the wall as “an act of vandalism”. Lomond said the wall had to come down because it was unsafe. A 20-metre stretch of sandstone wall was knocked down by a Lomond mechanical digger on April 7. Residents have argued the company manipulated the council to try and further its development plans. Their suspicions have now been reinforced by two company documents.
SHOCKED pals of Michaela Davis huddled together in trembling groups yesterday as they struggled to come to terms with the pretty youngsters death. They stood at the entrance to her Village estate in Clonsilla which was exactly at the point where the Garda tape sealed off the scene. The young teens watched as Garda vehicles passed up and down the road and officers hurried around the corner to where the body was discovered in undergrowth. One sobbed: “I just cant believe it. I saw her walking by my house yesterday. Its so hard to believe she is gone, just like that.” Pals said the pretty 12-yearold was short for her age but was much more mature. She was looking forward to returning to starting secondary school tomorrow. Her friends also revealed how she had worn her new uniform for the first time last Friday at Luttrelstown Community College when she picked up her timetable for the coming year.

“I never thought I would set myself on fire for anything, ever! But after working with Cold Fire, I knew I would be safe. If my demonstration saves one person from being burned, then it was worth it,” commented Sully Sullivan, star of the Pitchmen Show.

Cold Fire is a new generation fire-suppressing agent from Omni Response that instantly and safely extinguishes flames and leaves surfaces cool to the touch. Since most fire extinguisher-type products are dry powder, they offer no cooling effect. This important Cold Fire difference prevents heat damage and the possibility of fire. Cold Fire can even put out magnesium fires, which can burn at 5000 degrees and cannot be put out with water. Magnesium is found in many newer model vehicles.

Cold Fire is perfect for: kitchens, cars, boats, RVs, garages, workshops, fireplaces, backyards, grilling, around candles, and at camping sites. It is safe for the family, including children and pets. Easy to use and operate, no specialized training is required. It is non-corrosive; environmentally friendly, non-toxic, and biodegradable and does not leave a sticky or slippery residue, making it easy to clean up. It is proudly made in the U.S.A.

Among the industries confidently using Cold Fire are: fire and police departments, forestry departments, welders, trucking companies, the military and automotive racing organizations.

AMERICAN FORK ?– Most high school cross-country meets dont include hay bales strewn across pieces of the course. Most meets are also not run relay-style or two miles in length. These unique aspects of the American Fork Grass Relays have made it a popular event that continues to grow, even into its 15th year. “Years ago, one of our former runners wanted to have a race of this format, so we tried it and its just grown,” said American Fork girls cross-country coach Bruno Hunziker, mentioning that 43 schools participated this year. “We usually average about 30 teams so this is the biggest year by far. All the major schools are here.” Underclassmen competitors circled the same one-mile loop twice, running individually and all starting in a pack as they would in a typical race. Varsity runners, however, grouped into teams of five and ran the course as a relay. The winners of the girls race, four seniors and a speedy sophomore from Davis High who finished in 1:04:42, said they liked the variety of a different race style but it also added a challenge.
NEVER mind footballs blue moon rising over Manchester, the Cardiff Blues are finally going to shine down over Welsh rugby. The Blues are my tip for the title as the Magners League campaign prepares for kick-off next week with a new 12-team format. If I was still a betting man Id stick a few quid on the Blues to win the tournament for the first time. Id also have an outside flutter on the Scarlets who have been given long odds, but who I reckon will reach the play-offs by finishing in the top four. The Ospreys are likely to join then – along with either Leinster or Munster – while the introduction of the two Italian sides will add spice to the tournament if not fresh title challengers. But my hunch is for the Blues to deliver a longoverdue championship after so many years of disappointment and under- achievement in this tournament.
FARMINGTON — Ever since the Utah Open became more of a real Utah event a decade ago, the annual golf tournament has usually been won by Utah golfers. Last year was an exception when Nathan Lashley of Scottsdale, Ariz., won the tournament by three shots over Doug Garwood, thanks to a final-round 63. Lashleys back to defend his title this year, but hes among the relatively few out-of-state golfers in an event that used to be dominated by non-Utahns. The tournament, sponsored by Siegfried and Jensen, begins this morning at Oakridge Country Club and revamped its format in 2001 to include any club professional in the state who wanted to compete. This year, 126 of the 162 golfers are Utahns, mostly club professionals, along with several top amateurs.

Foster parents are a special ilk. They nurture other peoples children who have been removed from homes amid allegations of neglect and/or abuse. With proper supports and efforts on the part of birth parents, many children are reunited with their birth families. There are also occasions when foster families adopt the children who have been in their care. Presently, there are 2,800 foster children in state care. Many have intense needs, and they are spending longer periods in foster care. At the same time, amid overall budget cuts, the state has reduced foster care stipends to $14 a day for children who do not have special needs. These cuts took effect July 1. It costs roughly $11 more — $25 a day — to kennel a dog along the Wasatch Front. How on earth are foster parents supposed to provide the basic needs of these children — food, clothing and other necessities — on stipends that have been rolled back to 2007 rates? Its a disgrace. State lawmakers need to find a way to restore this funding to previous levels. While those rates were far from what experts say would be sufficient, cutting these stipends while foster parents are pinched by the economic downturn places tremendous stress on their household budgets. Some foster parents may not be able to continue to provide this much needed care under this funding arrangement. That means state child welfare workers will have fewer options to place children or they will be pressing foster families to accept more placements.

MORRIS PLAINS, N.J. — Weichert, Realtors recently received the Interactive Media Awards (IMA)
Outstanding Achievement Award for its website, Weichert.com. One of the
nation’s most visited real estate sites, Weichert.com was determined to
have excelled in all areas of the competition and represents a high
standard of planning, execution and overall professionalism.

“We are honored to have our website acknowledged with such a prestigious
award,” said James M. Weichert, president and founder of Weichert,
Realtors. “This recognition is a testament to the dedication of our
Internet and marketing departments who work tirelessly behind the scenes
to make Weichert.com a convenient and comprehensive source for buyers
and sellers online.”

The Outstanding Achievement award is the second highest honor bestowed
by IMA. Weichert received the award in the real estate category, which
included 63 total entries. Weichert.com received a score of 465 out of a
total possible score of 500 points.

Re-launched in early 2010, Weichert.com underwent several enhancements
to provide a simpler, more personalized experience for consumers
searching for a home online. Now, it also allows visitors to share
listings and other information on Facebook, Twitter and a host of other
social media, networking and bookmarking sites.

“We continually make adjustments and improvements to our site to ensure
that we are providing a top-notch experience for visitors. That is why

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. — North Carolina based Iron Horse Auction Company, Inc., a MarkNet
Alliance member, was recently the first auction company to ever conduct
a multi-parcel auction on location with live internet bidding available
through an interactive map.

The team at Iron Horse Auction broke new ground on their August 20th
auction offering a winery/vineyard onsite and to online bidders using
the open forum method of accelerated bidding using proprietary software
developed at MarkNet Alliance.

“Our company has strived to stay ahead to the curve on technology in
order to better serve our clients,” said Tom McInnis, one of the owners
at Iron Horse. “This new proprietary marketing tool will allow the
maximum participation for every property that we offer for sale. It will
prove to be the best method by which to attain maximum value for any
type of real estate offering.”

In the past there has not been a way to effectively offer property using
the multi-parcel method of selling to onsite and online bidders
simultaneously. Until this auction in order to use this method you would
have to rely on bidders traveling to the auction site. Now you can have
bidders at the site and international investors online bidding on the
property all in real time.

“Iron Horse Auction Company owners Tom McInnis and Bill Lilly along with
their team are masters of the trade. They did a tremendous job and made
auction history in the process,” said Chris Pracht, Director at MarkNet
Alliance.

WALTER SMITH is seeking a massive improvement on last seasons disastrous C h a m p i o n s L e a g u e campaign. Rangers finished bottom of their section after failing to win, home or away, against Seville, Stuttgart and Unirea. But while on paper Manchester United, Valencia and Bursaspor are even stronger, t h e I b r ox boss believes his players can step up. Smith (right) said: “Our Champions League performances from last season werent good enough, especially in our home games. “Manchester Uniteds pedigree is already set. Valencia have had a good few changes in their team for the first time in the last three seasons. They have lost four of their main players but have brought in another six or seven Spanish players. “They will be changed from the last two or three seasons where they have had fantastic consistency to finish third behind Barcelona and Real Madrid. “And Bursapor? Well, if you were drawn against Fenerbahce or Galatasaray you would say you wo u l d h ave a struggle. It would be a good game and Bursaspor have won the League and they beat Fenerbahce in the first game of the season.
SO sorry to see The X Factor “in crisis” yet again. Pulling in its biggest audiences of all time. Trust me, the Dark Lord isnt losing any sleep. His carefully staged pantomime is exactly where he wants it. all over the front pages. The talking point of the nation. “Youre fantastically nuts,” Simon told Shirlena. No, Simon. she was clinically nuts. As was glaringly obvious to everyone except you and your production team. She was also useless. And now shes gone. Sob. Meanwhile, massive mistake to improve the voices of the wannabes through the magic of the Auto-Tune editing machine. But are we absolutely sure it was working? Crying “fix” is all part of the pageant. Anything to keep the publicity pot boiling.

I HAVE never been comfortable watching the early auditions for The X Factor. Troubled souls are wheeled out to be openly jeered at by the audience and judges. We dont laugh and point at people with psychological problems in the street, so why should we be allowed to ridicule them on TV? When Shirlena Johnson leapt around on stage shrieking “Mercy”, Simon Cowell doubled over with laughter as did most of the audience. Yet it was painfully obvious this 30-yearold single mum had “issues” that showed up later in her doctors report. Cowell has now decided to axe Shirlena from the show, as much for his sake as hers.

IT is the storm before the storm. In theory, Chancellor George Osborne will identify the targets for 25-40% cuts in departmental spending this October. Holyrood Finance Sectretary John Swinney is set to wield the Scottish axe in November. But already Scotland is in a state of fiscal shock. Central Scotland Police has announced that 23% of its officers are to be axed. Strathclyde Police is cutting 25% of its support staff and 200 officers. Security at the Commonwealth Games in 2014 could be in danger, we are told, because of a lack of police personnel. As we report today, the Scottish Police Federation expects there will be a 9% cut in police funding over the next financial year. This amounts to pound(s)88 million – the equivalent of 2800 police officer posts. As a result, it predicts that violent crime will rocket, and there will be insufficient personnel to respond to emergencies. Could we be contemplating a Scotland in which 999 calls go unanswered? Throughout the public sector the story is the same, with councils and quangos vying to get their cuts in first. The newly elected leader of Glasgow City Council, Gordon Matheson, has forecast reductions in school transport, increased charges for sports facilities and an end to free personal care for the elderly. There is talk of merging some of Scotlands 32 councils, privatising water, curtailing rural transport. There is a clamour for the freeze on council tax to be ended. If that happens it will complete the triple-whammy of poorer services, higher charges and higher taxes. Schools, say Labour, are already in chaos with 90% of newly qualified teachers without a permanent job, while the Curriculum for Excellence is faltering because of a shortage of teachers and classroom assistants. Universities are retrenching. Social house- building is at a standstill. The Edinburgh Festival may look in rude health, but its organisers are warning about a funding crisis next year. Meanwhile, Glasgows prestigious arts institutions are contemplating uncertain futures. As for our health services, although the NHS is supposed to be ring-fenced, the British Medical Association is calling for the Government to start thinking about spending cuts now to avoid “slash and burn” later.
HOUSEHOLD finances came under greater pressure in August, according to new research from YouGov and Markit.
Gone are the days where women have no place in the boardroom, the operating room or the court room — yet, when it comes to personal finances, a surprising number of women still leave this chore to their husbands. And while its a good idea to divide household chores such as laundry and mowing the lawn, both halves of a couple should be aware of their complete financial portfolio, including investments, savings and debt.

Why do women often take a back seat to their mates when it comes to matters of money? She may be used to having her husband handle the finances, she may not have a good understanding of finances or perhaps she simply doesnt have an interest in them. But this is a mistake that often isnt discovered until its too late.

“Its important for women to learn about financial subjects now, rather than be forced to at an inconvenient time, like when dealing with death or divorce,” says Starr Cochran, a Certified Financial Planner™. “Ninety percent of women will have sole responsibility for their finances in their lifetime, yet 79 percent of women have not prepared for this.”

In an effort to help women become more engaged in their personal finances, Cochran penned the “econodrama,” The Bread Butter Chronicles. This novel approach to learning about finances is a fictional account of four women facing life-changing events — for instance, one womans husband dies, leaving behind a secret mountain of debt that force them into new awareness and responsibilities.

“A client inspired this book,” says Cochran, a first-time author with more than 25 years of experience as a financial advisor and tax accountant. “She told me she knew she needed to learn about money, but unless it was presented as a fun-to-read novel, shed never get it.” The result is an engaging and informative read focusing on realistic female characters going through personal challenges readers can relate to.

TEST cricket never fails to amaze me. When England collapsed to 102-7 just 40 overs into the game it would have taken a brave man to suggest that England would go on to win at Lords. Yet here we are this morning with England on the brink of a quite remarkable victory. Whoever says Test cricket is dull needs to take another look. We have been royally entertained with some outstanding batting and bowling which has been a wonderful advertisement for the game. The world-recordbreaking eighth-wicket partnership of 332 between Jonathan Trott and Stuart Broad was not only of the highest class but has enabled England to secure the series win. Pakistan thoroughly deserved their success at the Brit Oval last week and arrived at the home of cricket full of confidence.

Brian Brawdy, renowned survivalist and creator of The Brian Brawdy Show , which will launch in Fall 2010, has partnered with Lance Travel Trailers and Solutions From Science to create an off the grid mobile residence and production studio.

Brawdy cites his inspiration as an incident that occurred in Tampa, Florida. He was relaxing and enjoying a margarita while watching ships come and go in the harbor, when he noticed a yacht with both a solar panel and a wind turbine mounted to the structure. This innovation sparked Brawdys imagination and he realized he wanted to do something similar with an RV.

He designed the brackets and poles to secure the wind turbines on his Lance 2285 Travel Trailer, and then chose Solutions From Science to help him design the rest of the setup. The trailer uses 5 solar panels and 2 wind turbines to generate all the electricity that Brawdy needs. While this is impressive enough for a standard RV, Brawdy has transformed his trailer into a mobile production facility where he creates, edits and broadcasts his show, all powered by the natural energies of the sun and wind.

The heart of the system is the PowerHub 1800 Plus from Solutions From Science . The hub connects directly to the solar panels and turbines, and controls all of the electricity generated by these devices. Some of the energy is directed for immediate needs, while the remainder is stored in 4 100-amp hour batteries. Interestingly, the PowerHub 1800 Plus can actually be removed from the truck/trailer assembly and used as a portable power unit for severe situations.

This ultra-high efficiency solar generator can actually produce up to 1800 watts of electricity, supplying it as needed. It can be used to power almost anything from a mobile production studio to an off the grid residence.

During the hour long pre-release show titled “Heart Live!” on ShopNBC, Ann and Nancy Wilson will perform acoustic renditions of songs off their new album as well as a selection of their greatest hits in front of a live in-studio audience. Included with the pre-release of Hearts new album, Red Velvet Car, will be a 5-track greatest hits live album, exclusive to ShopNBC, and a vintage Heart t-shirt, which until now has only been available on the Heart website and at live performances. The entire pre-release package will be offered to ShopNBC viewers for $19.83. In addition to the live studio performance, customers may also preview clips of the new album online at ShopNBC (Search Term: Heart).

Like all Heart albums, Red Velvet Car rocks hard, but also has a deep acoustic side. Nancy Wilson has long been known to play her acoustic guitar with rock ferocity. With this album, an abundance of resonant acoustic instruments (guitars, mandolin, dobro, banjo, fiddle, viola, cello, and autoharp), played by Nancy Wilson and the albums producer, Ben Mink, are showcased in Hearts unique style. Nine of the albums songs were written especially for the album, Red Velvet Car. The albums closer, “Sand,” is a newly recorded version of a song originally written and recorded by the Lovemongers, Ann and Nancys 1990s acoustic side project.

“We are thrilled to bring internationally known music icon HEART to the ShopNBC network and provide our viewers with a one-of-a-kind shopping experience through this live performance,” said Bob Ayd, ShopNBCs President. “As a multi-media retailer operating with a premium lifestyle brand, we are highly focused on content, commerce and community to the surprise, delight, and entertainment of our 1 million customers. Establishing a strategic relationship with Sony Music will not only help expand what customers can expect from us, but also open the door for many new and exciting opportunities within the music industry going forward.”

“The arrival of Red Velvet Car, the first new HEART album in six years, is cause for celebration,” said Adam Block, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Legacy Recordings. “We think theres a great fit here and are excited for Nancy and Ann Wilson to be sharing their new songs live with their fans on this ShopNBC event.”

“The product enhancement will allow Local Splash to dramatically improve our offerings for businesses without websites, and those with websites that want their search results boosted,” said David Rodecker, Founder and CTO of Relevant Ads. “Its an important next step in our continued product leadership in the local, organic search field,” added Rodecker.

Because the product/service offering and geographic area are included in the domain name, CWA listings will see significant improvements in their search engine rankings, including the all-important Google Ranking. “Many search engines, including Google, like to see a URL or domain name that exactly matches certain terms in the search query. Thats the main idea behind the Custom Web Address,” Rodecker says. “And the domain name will also be a good marketing tool.”

Each CWA includes a 4-page website filled with unique, keyword-dense content and professional graphics. Critical information such as company description, product and service information, and a contact page are included, along with integration into sites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Yelp, and Merchant Circle.

By combining a traditional website with newer, Web 2.0 platforms, the CWA provides businesses with a sure-fire method to improve their search engine ranking and their visibility on the Internet. The CWA is included free in all Local Splash products, which start at $159 per month.

Bolingbrook, Illinois Man among Thousands Insured by WDS to Go
Paperless

SEATTLE — Washington Dental Service [WDS], a member of the Delta Dental Plans
Association, presented a $10,000 check to a Clearwire employee from
Bolingbrook, Illinois. Carmelo Garriga was one of Washington Dental
Service’s patients to commit to “go paperless” with dental coverage
transactions.

The sweepstakes kicked off Washington Dental Service’s campaign to
eliminate paper from all of its claims transactions by 2014. People
insured by WDS, employer groups, dentists, and brokers are among those
who use the firm’s online services. Through its paperless initiative,
the company is striving to limit its environmental impact and encourage
its partners to access information from its robust and secure web portal.

“Going paperless gets claims information to patients more quickly and
helps protect the environment,” said Kristin Merlo, Vice President,
Sales and Marketing. “As Washington’s largest dental benefits provider,
eliminating paper from our transactions can make a big difference. And
patients are excited to find plenty of useful information about oral
health and dental care on our website. ”

The company launched “Lose the Right Paper” sweepstakes on November 7
last year and promoted the contest at Seahawks and Sounders games, as
well as online. Every patient covered by Washington Dental Service who
signed up for paperless explanation of benefits, predeterminations,
payment vouchers or quarterly newsletters was automatically entered into
the sweepstakes.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Damaged and missing teeth are problems for millions of Americans each
year. However, with packed calendars it is harder to find the time to
schedule the multiple appointments needed to address these dental
problems. Dr. Kourosh Maddahi, a Cosmetic Dentist and dental restoration
specialist in Beverly Hills, Calif., has found a convenient solution by
offering his patients same-day dental crowns and dental implant
procedures.

“New advances in dental technology have made crown and dental implant
procedures faster than ever before. We are now able to offer our
patients the best in dental restorations in Beverly Hills without the
need for multiple appointments,” said Dr. Maddahi.

Traditional dental implant procedures could take months to complete.
With the addition of the Galileos Implant technology by Sirona, Dr.
Maddahi is able complete a dental implant procedure on the same day.
During a planning appointment, Dr. Maddahi takes a 360-degree scan of
the patient’s mouth and jaw in a few minutes. These 3-D images are used
to create a dental model and develop the necessary dental surgical
stents for the implant procedure.

At the implant appointment, Dr. Maddahi uses the surgical stents to
precisely place the dental implant posts. A temporary crown is placed
over the implant post allowing the patient to leave the office with a
new smile. When the implants have fused to the bone properly, Dr.
Maddahi will place the permanent crowns.

A crown procedure no longer means several dental appointments. The
procedure is easier than ever at Dr. Maddahi’s with same-day dental
crowns using the Cerec System. With digital impressions and 3-D images,
Dr. Maddahi designs a dental crown right in the office then an in-office
milling machine sculpts the crown to his meticulous standards in a
matter of minutes. The permanent crown then is ready to be fitted and
cemented into place. The whole process is completed in just a few hours.

Cinema possesses a rich history of collaboration between artists of sound, narrative, and image. However, traditional tendencies to perceive music as a strictly supportive background or accompaniment have been subjected to in-depth critique only recently. Abigail Childs interactions with musicians in Is This What You Were Born For? (1981-89) and Bill Morrisons partnership with composer Michael Gordon in Decasia (2001) exemplify (but by no means exhaust the possibilities of) the broader range of collaborative textures that cinema has always suggested. Not coincidentally, these works represent the influence on cinema of two popular music practices: the ubiquitous re-mixing that has emerged from hip-hop culture and the group composition typical of many rock bands. Abigail Child (also a poet, critic, and scholar) has had an influential career as an experimental filmmaker since the mid-1970s when she turned from professional documentary work to the creation of independent films focusing on gender, sexuality, class, and the critical possibilities of montage. Recycling found footage from a wide variety of sources, such as porn, industrial films, and home movies, and progressing cinematic techniques often associated primarily with the historical avant-garde of the early twentieth century, Child has created an oeuvre of incredible beauty and continuing social relevance. Her films are shown at major art museums and in experimental cinema venues and can be obtained through a variety of distribution channels. Is This What You Were Born For?, the series of short films Child created in the 1980s, underscores her exploration of interdisciplinary collaboration and these endeavors have had on her work. Michael Gordons award-winning career as a composer has resulted in a variety of notable intermedia collaborations, including for example operas with diegetic film components progressing beyond the more familiar application of projection as scenery and non-narrative music performances incorporating video. Gordon is a founding member of the highly regarded new music organization Bang on a Can, a group dedicated to facilitating the composition and performance of new music, often with an interdisciplinary dimension and independently of conservative academic contexts. Decasia, Gordons internationally celebrated collaboration with filmmaker Bill Morrison, is a symphony for full orchestra paired with a montage of archival nitrate footage in various states of intriguing and evocative decomposition. The final version of the film, edited to fit the live recording of the symphony performance, was featured in the 2002 Sundance Film Festival. Decasia synaesthetically elucidates subtleties inherent to myriad generative tensions: progress/tradition, memory/time, darkness/illumination, and mini-malism/totalism.
INTRODUCTION In commercial broiler production, a large safety margin used in feed formulation for supplemental inorganic trace minerals results in a high level of mineral excretion, which is harmful to the environment. It is believed that organic trace minerals are better absorbed and utilized than their inorganic counterparts and are protected from interactions that interfere with their bioavailability, thus leading to a reduction in the excretion of minerals (Scott et al., 1982; Leeson, 2003). Theoretically, the organic trace minerals may be able to be supplemented at a much lower level. However, the apparent absorption of Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn based on excreta does not provide a suitable measurement of the bioavailability of trace minerals (Ammerman, 1995). Apart from indigestible trace minerals and cell abrasion, the excreta mainly contain excess trace minerals which can not be absorbed (Underwood and Suttle, 1996b). Most study on organic trace minerals for broilers have used conventional diets, tending to exceed the birds requirement (Lee et al., 2001; Paik, 2001) and a negative digestibility of trace minerals. However, using a special control diet (Bao et al., 2007a), which is deficient in Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn, may provide a means for determining the digestibility of organic trace minerals in different parts of the gastro-intestinal tract (GIT) as it becomes possible to avoid trace mineral excess in the GIT.

combines diverse, abundant, affordable IP bandwidth sources, creating
broadband links with business-class reliability at consumer prices. As a

National / Four Region Overview: Across the U.S., home prices posted 5.2% quarter-over-quarter gains, placing prices firmly 8.8% above levels experienced one year ago. Regionally, the Midwest and South saw the largest quarterly price growth, while the West and Northeast show more stable quarterly gains.

Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) drilldown: Home price gains across the U.S. were helped largely by the quarterly jump in prices by the top 15 highest performing major markets. Quarterly prices for the group are up an average 12.6%, while yearly price gains are up 17.1%.

Micro Market Analysis: Home prices in the Los Angeles MSA rebounded 13.2% from its market bottom one year ago. While this surpassed the 8.8% gains seen nationally for the same period, conditions varied widely across this large and diverse market.

The Clear Capital HDI Market Report offers the industry, investors and lenders a timely look at pricing conditions, not only at the national and metropolitan level, but within local markets as well. Clear Capital data is built on the most recent data available from recorder/assessor offices, and then further enhanced by adding the Companys proprietary market data for the most comprehensive geographic coverage available.

“Price trends nationwide have seen a considerable upswing driven in large part by the flurry of recent sales attributed to the tax credit and springtime buying activity,” said Dr. Alex Villacorta, Senior Statistician, Clear Capital. “This months national quarterly gains are certainly a positive sign that many markets have responded to the tax credit incentive, but overall markets remain volatile as evidenced by the six month price change keeping mostly flat.”

Session Will Discuss How Health Plans Can Begin Planning for Mandated
Changes in Mental Health and Substance Abuse Care Regulations

WAYNE, Pa. — MEDecision,
Inc., a leading provider of collaborative
healthcare management solutions, will present a complimentary
webinar discussing member-centric behavioral health utilization
management and what health plans need to begin considering today to
prepare for the changes coming tomorrow, including related workflow
requirements. The session will be held on Wednesday, July 14 at 12:30
p.m. Eastern time (9:30 a.m. Pacific time).

Hosted by MEDecision’s Vice President of Product Marketing Brian Nagle,
Director of Clinical Programs Suzanne Kunze and Clinical Product Manager
Dawn Kramer, the webinar will examine the societal, economic and
regulatory factors that are driving insurers to increase access, improve
outcomes, and control costs for mental health and substance abuse care.
Its primary topics will include:

By Sara Noel Being frugal doesnt have to be anyone elses business. Some frugal people dont have like-minded friends and relatives, so they keep their frugality to themselves. But even if you enjoy talking about your money-saving ways with others, there is probably at least one thing you dont care to share. Maybe you use hankies, save food from your plates for leftovers or pick up cans to recycle when out for a walk. Here are a few more frugal habits that are commonly kept under wraps. Dumpster diving: Some people dont want to admit that they rummage through Dumpsters or shop the curbside mall (even checking neighborhood recycle bins for coupon inserts) for frugal treasures to rescue. It is amazing the number of items that get tossed out because they are considered imperfect. Check your local area ordinances. Most areas consider trash public domain. Be sure to check that it isnt a breach of privacy in your area, too. Dont dive in fenced-area Dumpsters or where any do not trespass signs are posted.
Up to 90 percent of business records theft involves payroll and personnel records, according to the Federal Trade Commission. Sometimes the thief is an employee or an outsider working with an employee. Sometimes the misappropriation is through simple neglect where records are left unlocked, whether at a doctors office, or a financial specialists office, or sometimes simply left in discarded file cabinets, or placed by a business intact in a dumpster. Thieves sometimes target specific forms such as the I-9 used to verify that an employee is legally working in this country. The I-9 is filled out at the time the employee is hired or within three days thereafter, but doesnt have to be filled out unless a person is actually hired. Avoiding filling the form out until an employee is actually hired relieves an employer of work that isnt necessary and prevents the unintended theft of the information concerning those not hired. Thieves can use the information on the I-9s to open credit card accounts, obtain cell phones, and do almost anything the owner of the information could do. Generally a thief does more monetary damage with information he uses to set up new accounts rather than with information allowing him to access existing accounts of a victim. The pages of the I-9s contain Social Security numbers, addresses, names, dates of birth, and possibly verifying documentation including copies of drivers licenses or Social Security cards. The Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA) addresses protection associated with identity theft and applies to all employers. FACTA requires employers to properly dispose of consumer reports often collected on new employees. Businesses violating FACTA can be sued by employees and fined. While FACTA doesnt require an employer to dispose of the information, if the employer does dispose of it, it must be done securely. Documents cannot legally just be placed intact into a dumpster or otherwise thrown away where someone could access them. FACTA applies to all employers who gather personal information, regardless of the companys size. Reasonable destruction methods include burning, pulverizing, or shredding paper containing the information or destroying or erasing electronic media so that the information cannot be read or reconstructed, or hiring a reputable third party to destroy the records accordingly. An employer must retain only reputable contractors to destroy records and must remain cognizant of the fact that handing off documents for destruction is a prime time for the records to be accessed for nefarious purposes. If the contractor messes up, the employer may still remain liable.

BURBANK, Calif. — Disney Interactive Studios today announced that after an explosive
release for video game consoles, Windows PC and iPhone in May, Split/Second
will be speeding onto the PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system and PSPGo. Split/Second,
which was named Best Racing Game by Game Critics Awards: Best of E3
2009, is expected to be available for these new handheld systems this
holiday season.

In Split/Second, players don’t just race to the finish line to
beat their opponents, they build up their power meter through deft
driving and triggering “power plays,” explosive moments that take out
opponents or alter the track. The game takes place within a
hyper-competitive reality television show with city-sized sets rigged
for destruction. Each track has numerous power plays that can be
strategically triggered by skilled drivers. Competitors in Split/Second
don’t just collide with other vehicles to knock them from the track —
they can trigger blockbuster action film-like explosive events that
drastically alter the dynamics of the race. Players must use strategy
and pinpoint timing to derail opponents, tactically alter the track or
create entirely new routes.

“Split/Second has become a hit with fans of racing and action
games, and is the perfect fit for the PSP system,” said Craig Relyea,
senior vice president of global marketing, Disney Interactive Studios.
“The explosive track altering features and fast arcade racing will have
PSP system players worldwide playing it on-the-go or at home.”

Split/Second for the PSP system will include unique handling and
controls designed specifically for Sony’s premier handheld game
platform. The game will feature an exclusive new track and challenges
not found on the current versions. In addition, the game also includes
four-player local multiplayer.

BAGHDAD — Iraqi officials say at least five people have been killed by bombs targeting pilgrims taking part in the final day of a Shiite religious holiday. Police and hospital officials say the five were believed to be pilgrims on their way home from visiting a mosque in northern Baghdad to mark the anniversary of the death of a revered Shiite figure. Four died in eastern Baghdad when a roadside bomb exploded, while a car bomb in southern Baghdad killed the fifth person. Hundreds of thousands of devout Shiites from across the country walk to Baghdad to take part in the occasion. But the crowds make prime targets for Sunni insurgents.

INTRODUCTION Fat deposition of pigs is of economic importance because of market incentives for lean pork production and decreased feeding costs. It is crucial to investigate and characterize new candidate genes and QTL relevant to pig fat deposit traits. To date, several quantitative trait loci (QTL) significantly affecting 10th-rib, average backfat thickness and other production traits have been mapped on SSC7 (Wang et al., 1998; Nagamine et al., 2003). Peroxisomal [[DELTA].sup.3],[[DELTA].sup.2]-enoyl-CoA isomerase (PECI) was located near the boundary of the quantitative trait loci (QTL) region. [[DELTA].sup.3],[[DELTA].sup.2]-enoyl-CoA isomerase (Ecilp) is unique because its activity is necessary for [beta]-oxidation of all unsaturated fatty acids (Geisbrecht et al., 1999). The series of enzyme-catalyzed reactions required for degradation of fatty acids are evolutionarily conserved and accomplished primarily through the p-oxidation pathway. In peroxisomes, ECI was predicted to be a dominant enzyme for 3-cis 3[right arrow]2-trans and 3-trans 3[right arrow]2-trans isomerizations of long-chain intermediates (Zhang et al., 2002). Fatty acid [beta]-oxidation in mammals is considerably more complicated, primarily due to the existence of overlapping but distinct fatty acid poxidation pathways. Mammalian peroxisomes contain at least three fatty acyl-CoA oxidases, both L-specific and D-specific 2-enoyl-CoA hydratase/3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase multifunctional proteins, and at least two thiolases, all of which are encoded by different genes (Palosaari et al., 1990a, 1991; Geisbrecht et al., 1998; Gurvitz et al., 1998; Geisbrecht et al., 1999; Partanen et al., 2004). When the ECI was completely excised in the mouse, it extensively perturbed the metabolism of unsaturated fatty acids, especially for short interval starvation and the fatty acid pattern of complex phospholipids was strongly altered (Palosaari et al., 1990b; Janssen et al., 2002). The PECI gene can be encoded by ECI1 and it is required for growth of saccharomyces cerevisiae on unsaturated fatty acids (Gurvitz et al., 1998). It can be concluded that the PECI gene may play an important role during the metabolic processing of unsaturated fatty acids. Deposition of fat by animals in their bodies is associated with the metabolism of fatty acids, and more research would contribute to understanding of porcine fat deposition. Genomic DNA was isolated from blood of mature Tongcheng pigs (Hubei province, China) by phenol/chloroform extraction. RNA was extracted from muscle tissue of adult Tongcheng pigs and adult Swedish Landrace with TRIzol reagent kit (Life Technologies, Grand Island, NE, USA). RACE (the rapid amplification of cDNA ends) was performed according to the instructions of the SMARTTM RACE cDNA Amplification Kit (Clontech Inc, Palo Alto, CA, USA). The PCR products of RACE were purified with the Wizard PCR Preps DNA Purification System (Promega, Madison, WI, USA). ORF were found by the program SeqMan (DNA star, Madison, WI, USA) and the amino acid sequences were deduced with Primer5.0 (Primer Premier5.0, Premier, Canada). Using the pGEM T-easy vector, DNase I (RNase-free) and M-MLV reverse transcriptase from TaKaRa Dalian (Dalian, China), primers were synthesized (Table 1) and PCR products were sequenced by AuGCT Biotechnology (Bejing, China).

Readership Climbs 20% and Revenue Jumps 40% as New Projects
Attract Readers and Advertisers

SAN FRANCISCO — New partnerships, applications, important investigative reporting,
thought leadership and awards are attracting more readers and
advertisers to Salon.com,
the trusted news and culture site known for quality journalism. Salon
today announced that unique visits to the site are up by 20% for the
second quarter of 2010 over the same time period last year, while
revenue increased 40% over the same period.

While all referral traffic is up 120% year over year, Salon social media
traffic is up by a whopping 720%. Experts say referral traffic (from
search engines, social media sites, and third-party sites) is the key to
overall audience growth, but that it can be tricky to attract because it
is directly dependent on site content. If the content is meaningful and
well written, others will link to it.

The results come on the heels of steady growth in the previous quarter,
where the company also saw substantial growth in unique visitors and
referrals.

“As the cacophony of Internet-driven media grows ever louder, the
compelling perspective and crisp personality of Salon becomes ever more
attractive,” explained Salon Media Group CEO Richard Gingras. “We are
pleased that our efforts to evolve and expand Salon are bearing
excellent results.”

ThreatMetrix™, a fast growing provider of fraud prevention solutions that do not require personally identifiable information (PII), today announced that Adknowledge, the largest privately-owned ad network, has selected ThreatMetrix to help control online fraud and abuse on its Super Rewards platform for online games and social networks.

Super Rewards is a leading provider of monetization solutions for online games and social networks. The Super Rewards “offer wall” delivers highly targeted advertising offers to millions of global web site and social network users. Super Rewards allows online publishers to incorporate its monetization platform as a seamless and integral component to their online games. Online gamers can earn in-game points by completing offers, such as filling out surveys, watching videos, or subscribing to online services that are of value to them.

“We work with thousands of publishers with hundreds of millions of users around the world,” said Adam Caplan, vice president virtual currency, Adknowledge. “Some users are so passionate about the games they play that they will go to extraordinary lengths to acquire excess virtual currency, including abusing advertising offers that we make available on our platform. In other cases, fraudsters will use stolen credit cards or other abusive payment mechanisms to accumulate virtual currency to sell to others in the game for profit. Its critical for us to separate the abusers from the vast majority of users who are interested in the brands and the products they sign up for, or validly pay for the virtual currency they use.”

As online gaming continues to grow, Super Rewards understands that maintaining a strong fraud protection system is vital. In order to accomplish this goal, Super Rewards strengthened its in-house fraud prevention systems by adding the ThreatMetrix Fraud Network to its anti-fraud measures. ThreatMetrix global reputations, customizable rules, and tracking, greatly extend Super Rewards ability to mitigate abuse on specific levels, often before they reach its publishers.

“When users sign up for specific advertising offers without having any real interest in the associated brands or products, we risk degrading the quality of leads that we provide to advertisers,” said Caplan. “Our goal with the ThreatMetrix Fraud Network is to improve the quality of leads we provide to our advertisers and reduce the dollar amount of refunds and chargebacks from both payment technology providers and advertisers. The bottom line is that we jeopardize the integrity of our brand and the viability of our business if fraud and abuse are left unchecked. Thats why we partnered with ThreatMetrix to fortify our fraud protection systems.”

Innovative Solution Expected to Dramatically Expand Access to AR
for Users Worldwide; Empowers Designers, Agencies, Non-Programmers to
Develop AR Apps

LOS ANGELES — Total Immersion, the global leader in augmented reality, today announced
the launch of its new software and security solution: D’Fusion® for
Adobe® Flash® Player.

The product is the long-awaited solution to the increasing demand from
online marketing professionals and advertisers for easily accessible
augmented reality experiences for a wide audience of consumers. Adobe®
Flash® Player already reaches 99 percent of Internet-enabled desktops,
avoiding the need for an AR specific plug-in download.

The new release of D’Fusion® for Adobe® Flash® Player enables
development of applications with Adobe® Flash® ActionScript® language
using Marker-Less Tracking Lite (MLT) technology. This process uses
existing 2D and 3D materials to directly recognize images printed on the
packaging or the product itself. This is a significant advantage for
advertisers, since it does not require additional AR-specific markers on
the materials to trigger the experience.

In line with its content protection and “brand image” securing policy,
Total Immersion has proposed an innovative security mechanism with this
new module, preventing third parties from misusing media.

1,600 Home and Public Charging Stations for EVs Statewide

** MEDIA AVAILABILITY ** July 8, 2010 at EPRI Headquarters in Palo
Alto to Feature State Energy Commissioner, DOE, Coulomb and EPRI
Executives

CAMPBELL, Calif. — Coulomb
Technologies today announced it was awarded $3,417,000 from the
California Energy Commission through matching funds; this will bring a
$12 million project into California, including $5 million of federal
funding. The grant will provide funds for the installation of
ChargePoint® Networked Charging Stations for electric vehicles in three
California metro regions, Los Angeles, Sacramento and the San Jose/San
Francisco Bay Area. The Energy Commission award is a part of Coulomb’s
recently announced $37 million ChargePoint
America program to provide nearly 5000 public and home charging
stations in nine regions in the United States.

The first California installation of the ChargePoint America program
will be unveiled at a news conference on Thursday, July 8, 2010 at 9:30
a.m. PST at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) headquarters in
Palo Alto, California. The EPRI stations will be used to collect
research data on the requirements of workplace charging. Presenting at
the event will be Silicon Valley Leadership Executive Director Carl
Guardino, Energy Commissioner Jeffrey Byron, Coulomb President Praveen
Mandal, EPRI Vice President of Environment and Renewables Sector Bryan

Owens.

Leaders throughout California commented on Coulomb’s grant award:

Panasonic, the leading manufacturer of cordless home telephones worldwide,* today announced that all of its 2010 cordless home telephone systems, available at retailers nationwide, feature proprietary DECT 6.0 PLUS ™ performance for optimal sound quality and extended range. Additionally, the phones offer extended battery life and a variety of time-saving and convenience features designed for the way todays multi-tasking families use their cordless phones.

Panasonics 2010 cordless phones are designed with feedback from extensive consumer research and raise the bar on performance in three key ways:

Improved Voice Quality
In response to consumer demand, Panasonics proprietary DECT 6.0 PLUS technology provides better quality reception by increasing the error-correction rate by 80 times compared with Panasonics prior DECT 6.0 models.

Extended Battery Life
2010 Panasonic cordless phones feature Intelligent Eco Mode, which automatically lowers the handsets power consumption when used near the base station. The result is up to 13 hours of continuous talk time on average, compared to 11 hours of continuous talk time when not using Intelligent Eco Mode.

Double the Transmission Distance with Range Extender Module
The new Range Extender module, included with the KX-TG4053B and sold separately as an accessory for all other 2010 models (SRP $29.95), doubles the effective transmission distance between the base unit and handsets when compared with previous models.

Medicare Beneficiaries Whose High Prescription Drug Costs Have Put
Them in the Medicare Part D Donut Hole to Receive $250 Rebate Checks as
a Result of the Affordable Care Act

WASHINGTON — The next round of more than 300,000 eligible seniors who have entered
the Medicare Part D “donut hole” this year have been mailed their
tax-free, one time rebate check for $250, U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced today .
These one-time rebate checks are the first step in closing
the prescription drug coverage gap under the Affordable Care Act. The
first round of checks were distributed in the middle of June. As
qualifying Medicare recipients “fall into the donut hole,” they will be
sent a rebate check by Medicare.

“Seniors and other Medicare recipients in the Medicare donut hole are
struggling to afford the medications they need and their basic living
expenses. Seventy percent of our first round of these $250 rebate checks
were cashed within a week of eligible Medicare recipients receiving
them; so, we know that folks really need some help,” said Secretary
Sebelius. “The Affordable Care Act starts to close the donut hole this
year, giving much-needed relief to millions of seniors. In 2011, the
Affordable Care Act takes an additional step for Medicare beneficiaries
in the donut hole by providing them with a 50 percent discount on their
brand name medications. Every year from 2012 until 2020, the Affordable
Care Act will take progressive steps to close the donut hole.”

On Thursday, July 8, at 2:00 p.m., HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius will
join local officials in Manchester, N.H., for a forum with senior
citizens to discuss the rebate checks and other benefits of the
Affordable Care Act as well as efforts to fight Medicare fraud.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Bioject Medical Technologies Inc. (OTCBB: BJCT), a leading developer of
needle-free injection therapy systems, today announced that Bioject’s
needle-free injection delivery technology was used to successfully
demonstrate that intradermal administration of fractional doses of
inactivated poliovirus vaccine given to infants is safe and effective
(using seroconversion as an indication of effectiveness), and is
preferred by both health care administrators and parents over typical
full-dose needle and syringe. The study results, published in the June
24, 2010, issue of The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM
Vol. 362 No. 25), also demonstrated a significant cost savings
in use of the fractional-dose intradermal injection as compared with a
full-dose vaccination course of treatment using an auto-disable needle
and syringe.

The study was conducted in Oman and supported by the Ministry of Health
of Oman, the Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH) and the
World Health Organization (WHO) as part of the Global Polio Eradication
Initiative (GPEI). The randomized clinical trial of over 400 infants, of
whom 373 fulfilled the entry criteria, were selected to receive either
fractional-dose inactivated poliovirus vaccine (one-fifth of the full
dose) or a full-dose of the same vaccine over a three course treatment
during the first six months of age. The intradermal fractional-dose was
given with Bioject’s Biojector®2000 (B2000) needle-free injection
delivery device and the full-dose was delivered with an auto-disable
syringe and needle. The study was designed to assess the safety and
efficacy of, and preference for, the needle-free intradermal
fractional-dose and the potential to use a needle-free intradermal
fractional-dose vaccine option with infants in order to prevent polio
infection. The results of the study demonstrate that needle-free
intradermal administration of fractional doses of the polio vaccine was
safe, effective and lower cost than a similar course treatment with full
dose needle-syringe option. In addition, both health caregivers and
parents expressed a preference for the needle-free option because “the
baby does not cry.”

The study was one of the research and development initiatives stemming
from the GPEI’s goal to develop affordable injectable polio vaccine
options for the post-eradication era. GPEI is spearheaded by national
governments, WHO, Rotary International, the US Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC) and UNICEF.

“We are pleased to have participated in this significant clinical trial
and to learn about the positive results with intradermal fractional-dose
injection of inactivated polio vaccine using Bioject’s intradermal
delivery technology,” said Dr. Richard Stout, Bioject’s Executive Vice
President and Chief Medical Officer. Dr. Stout added, “Based on the
findings, as reported in the NEJM, we now have evidence that
demonstrates potential cost savings when using intradermal needle-free
injection delivery technology as compared with typical full-dose
injections. In addition, we along with the parents of the treated
infants are delighted to hear that the babies did not cry, leading to a
significant preference for Bioject’s needle-free injection devices. We
look forward to working with other organizations around the world who
are interested in leveraging the benefits of our needle-free intradermal
injection delivery technology for their vaccine portfolios,” commented
Dr. Stout.

Bioject Medical Technologies Inc., based in Portland, Oregon, is
an innovative developer and manufacturer of needle-free injection
therapy systems (NFITS). NFITS provide an empowering technology and work
by forcing medication at high speed through a tiny orifice held against
the skin. This creates a fine stream of high-pressure fluid penetrating
the skin and depositing medication in the tissue beneath. The Company is
focused on developing mutually beneficial agreements with leading
pharmaceutical, biotechnology and veterinary companies.

fractional-dose inactivated poliovirus vaccine (one-fifth of the full
dose) or a full-dose of the same vaccine over a three course treatment
during the first six months of age.

Toll of Stress Impacting Health Care Costs, Absenteeism and Workplace
Safety

NEW YORK — Employers understand the detrimental effects stress is having on their
organizations, and are responding with multiple strategies to help
workers cope, a recent survey by Buck
Consultants, A Xerox Company, indicates.

The survey, ‘Stress in the Workplace,’ identifies the areas most
affected by stress and the strategies employed by organizations to
reduce stress for their workers. The research was conducted at the
WorldatWork Total Rewards Conference in May 2010. The study analyzes
responses from more than 250 conference attendees, representing more
than 200 organizations of various sizes and industries.

“Most employers realize that a stressed-out workforce drives up health
care costs,” said Barry Hall, principal at Buck Consultants. “Employers
are responding by introducing numerous methods to combat the impact of
work-related stress.”

Hall noted that workplace issues highly affected by stress are:

Funds Earmarked to “.Encourage Cutting Edge and Innovative
Biomedical Exploration”

RUTHERFORD, Calif. — The International Mental Health Research Organization (IMHRO) today
announced a collaboration with the Johnson Johnson Corporate Office of
Science and Technology (COSAT). Under the terms of this collaboration,
COSAT will provide a $250,000 grant towards the funding of IMHROs
Rising Star Awards. COSATs grant will be matched by IMHRO to establish
the COSAT-IMHRO Rising Star Awards Program, which, in 2010, will fund
two Rising Star Awards.

The objective of the COSAT-IMHRO Rising Star Awards Program is to
advance the understanding of underlying disease mechanisms in bipolar
disorder, schizophrenia and major depression with the great potential to
benefit patients and the healthcare system. The IMHRO Rising Star Awards
support cutting edge research programs throughout the world on the study
of psychiatric brain disorders, and are distributed annually at the
Staglin Family Music Festival For Mental Health, held this year in
September in Rutherford, Napa Valley, California.

“Our approach at IMHRO is to fund the best science as determined by our
independent scientific advisory board,” stated Garen Staglin, co-founder
of IMHRO, and proprietor of Staglin Family Vineyard. “This collaboration
will fund research of key scientists and will bring us closer than ever
to helping find the causes and cures for mental illness.”

The COSAT-IMHRO Rising Star Awards Program is intended to advance the
translation of discoveries from basic science research into therapies
for major psychiatric diseases. Understanding the mechanism of action
and the role in the brain of genes that are altered in psychiatric
disease supplies the first clue as to how these disorders arise. This
grant program fosters the next steps toward discovering therapies
through research into approaches that re-normalize or compensate for the
alterations that have already been discovered.

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Energy crop company Ceres, Inc. announced today that it has completed a
private offering of convertible preferred stock. The proceeds will be
used, in part, to expand the company’s research and commercialization
activities in the advanced biofuels and biomass-to-power markets.

Over the past three years the company has launched its energy grass seed
business in the United States and expanded its research and
commercialization activities into the biopower, bio-based chemical and
sugar-to-biofuel markets, including joint projects with electric
utilities and next-generation biorefineries. The company also grew its
international presence, and is deploying its seeds and technology in
Brazil. Ceres President and CEO Richard Hamilton says that Ceres plans
to build a leadership position in each of these markets.

“The common denominator among these diverse renewable energy markets is
having a scalable and economic source of feedstock,” said Hamilton. “We
believe that dedicated energy grasses are uniquely capable of supplying
the raw materials that will be needed for long-term growth.”

“In addition to the operational benefits, this new funding will allow us
to maintain our independence to collaborate with participants across the
energy and agricultural industries – a freedom that has proven highly
valuable as we help assemble value chains among growers, bioenergy
companies and technology providers,” said Hamilton. “These joint
projects are proving critical to validating our technology and products
with the nascent bioenergy industry.”

Ceres currently markets improved seed varieties of switchgrass and
high-biomass sorghum under its Blade Energy Crops brand, and has
additional research programs in sweet sorghum and miscanthus. The
California-based company’s biotech pipeline includes traits that can
improve the economics of bioenergy production, make greater use of
marginal land and enhance the environmental benefits of energy grasses.
In 2009, Ceres received a prestigious ARPA-E award from the U.S.
Department of Energy to evaluate a trait that increases yield and
reduces fertilizer requirements.

SAN FRANCISCO LONDON — UK home shopping giant Freemans Grattan Holdings (FGH) is predicting an
up to 33% reduction in customer debt thanks to next generation customer
lifecycle analytics from KXEN.

FGH – UK arm of Otto Group, the world’s largest mail order group and the
second largest retailer on the Internet – has deployed KXEN analytics in
its credit risk team after three years of using the solution in
marketing. Now, with bad debt propensity scoring that relies on internal
customer data as well as third party information, FGH is set to reduce
customer debt by as much as one third according to predictions.

“We’d used KXEN successfully in marketing for three years and saw no
reason to consider a different solution for credit risk modeling,” says
FGH head of customer management Andy Bryan. “The target was to improve
our ability to predict which customers would default. The new KXEN
scorecard has significantly improved our authorization process and
retrospective analysis suggests we can cut debt by as much as 33% with
only a 3% lower acceptance rate for credit.”

Combining three of the biggest names in the UK home shopping market, FGH
holds a dominant position with some 1.5 million customers and sales of
more than £250 million in its last financial year. Its customers come
from all age groups and many of them are fiercely loyal, having shopped
with FGH for years. The availability of credit to people who are unable
to get it through other sources is a key USP.

“We’re still accepting a similar number of credit orders. The big
difference is that now we’re accepting more orders from good customers
and fewer from bad customers. That’s because with KXEN we’re able to use
things we know about how customers have managed their accounts with us
in the past, rather than having to rely on a single external score,”
says Andy Bryan. “It also means that our long-standing customers who
have built up a level of trust with our brands are being treated fairly.

Richmont Mines Inc. (”Richmont” or the “Company”) (TSX: RIC)(NYSE Amex: RIC) is pleased to announce that all 17 levels of the Francoeur Mine have been dewatered and that underground development work is scheduled to begin next week.

To date, surface infrastructure at the Francoeur Mine has been re-commissioned, and is fully equipped for mine development purposes. Initial underground preparation work will be completed this week to prepare for the planned drift excavation efforts needed to access the targeted West Zone. Installation of additional underground electrical infrastructure required for commercial production will be done in conjunction with the development work.

Recruitment for the Francoeur Mine is progressing well, with crews needed for the development phase already in place. The Company expects to be able to attract the needed additional qualified personnel, as the mine is located just 25 km southwest of Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, in the heart of the Abitibi Gold Belt.

The Francoeur property also has indicated resources of 76,449 grading 7.54 g/t for 18,541 ounces of gold and inferred resources of 202,250 tonnes grading 5.95 g/t for 38,706 ounces of gold. The possibility of increasing current resources are favourable considering that several mineralized zones located in the footwall and hangingwall of the West Zone have already been drill-identified. However, additional definition drilling from underground is needed to fully evaluate their size and grade before adding them to the mineral inventory. To this end, Richmont plans to initiate an underground exploration and definition drilling program once sufficient development work to access the targeted West Zone has been completed.
